Dr. Honor Abaecheta completed her first degree in Chemistry at Imperial College of Science and Technology. After two years teaching "A" level chemistry in a private school in London she was awarded the Laura Ashley Scholarship for mature students and enrolled at Guy's and St Thomas' Medical School. She graduated in 1994.
Dr. Abaecheta did her vocational training in London and after spending a year working as a general practitioner in Notting Hill she joined the Foreign and Commonwealth Office as medical adviser. She then spent three years working at the FCO specialising in general practice advice, occupational health and travel medicine. Dr. Abaecheta was medical adviser for many FCO worldwide policies particularly the FCO HIV policy and the Emergency Medical Care for Montserrat policy.
After leaving the FCO in 2003 she spent a short spell working in the City of London before becoming a partner in an NHS GP practice in south London where she developed her interests in teaching and in women's health.
Her special interest in occupational health brought her back to the City and she joined Roodlane in October 2006.
Shakeel graduated in Medicine from Glasgow University in 1988 and after working in hospital and General Practice for several years joined Roodlane in 2001 obtaining qualifications in Occupational Medicine during this period.
In 2005 an interest in Remote and Rural Medicine took him back to his Scottish homeland and to the isolated Shetland Isles and Outer Hebrides of Scotland where he gained valuable experience in dealing with the unexpected and unusual before returning to Roodlane in 2008 to run our Scottish office based in Glasgow.
Shakeel is an outstanding clinician and communicator who brings many years experience of General Practice and Occupational Medicine with him and has a special interest in Stress Management and Nutrition.
Out of work he enjoys spending time with his growing young family, is an accomplished musician and collector of old records.
John trained in Edinburgh and spent six years in casualty and surgery posts all over the UK before joining the Royal Air Force in 1988. He worked as a senior medical officer qualifying in General Practice, Aviation Medicine and Occupational Medicine on stations in the UK and overseas until 1998 when he moved to command staff posts in occupational medicine for RAF Headquarters and the Ministry of Defence. During this time he was accredited as a specialist in Occupational Medicine in 2003.
Throughout his RAF career he participated in operations and exercises as a flight medical officer, aero medical evacuation coordinator, and was responsible for the medical standards for recruitment and retention in the services.
After completing his RAF commission in 2005, John settled in London and joined a national occupational medicine provider becoming a senior occupational physician with national and international companies as clients. He has enjoyed training colleagues throughout his career and was able to continue with this as a tutor for Manchester University. He joined Roodlane in September 2007.
John has a keen interest in rehabilitation and fitness for work. He is a Member of the Faculty of Occupational Medicine, a Member of the International Institute for Risk and Safety Management, and a fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine.
Malcolm joined Roodlane in 2007 after many years as a managing partner in another private City based practice. He brings with him years of experience in the field of corporate medicine and general practice and is highly respected within the City.
He graduated from the University of Cape Town. He did postgraduate work in paediatrics and had the enviable position of working with researchers such as Professor Chris Barnard , famous for carrying out the first heart transplant.
He has developed interests in corporate health, sports medicine and medical insurance underwriting. His outside interests include running and tennis as well as following international rugby and cricket.
Geoff joined the practice in July 2003. His academic background began in Nottingham where he graduated in 1991 with a 1st class honours in Medical Science. He stayed on in Nottingham to train as a physician rapidly gaining Membership of the Royal College of Physicians. He followed this by exploring his interest in tropical medicine at the centre of excellence in Liverpool before working in Soviet Central Asia for a year with Médecins Sans Frontiers. When he returned to the UK Geoff completed his range of qualifications by adding his General Practice training and became a Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners with distinction in 1998.
He recently added to this with GP Specialist training in drug addiction and holds GP Specialist status in this field. Before he joined Roodlane, Geoff combined working as a principal in NHS general practice with academic work at King's College. He has special interests in dermatology and minor surgery, sports injury (having had many himself!) and psychological medicine, with a particular expertise in conditions such as chronic fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome and stress related problems. He became a partner in 2007.
Ken undertook his medical training at Birmingham University Medical School and joined the Royal Army Medical Corps on a 5-year short service commission. He became interested in flying and aviation medicine and was fortunate enough to be trained as a helicopter pilot by the Army Air Corps. Following a tour as an operational helicopter pilot in Germany, he specialised in aviation medicine, eventually becoming the Senior Consultant in Aviation Medicine in the Army. He remained an active Army pilot for 16 years.
Ken left the Army in 1988 to join British Caledonian Airways as their Chief Medical Officer; following their merger with British Airways he became the Principal Medical Officer at Gatwick. In 1992, he joined the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) as their Chief Medical Officer and, in June 1997, became head of the newly formed Personnel Licensing Division with responsibilities for the Departments of Flight Crew Licensing, Engineer Licensing, Medical, and Human Factors. A major aspect of his 8 years work with the Authority was European and International harmonisation of medical and licensing standards.
He retired from the CAA in December 1999 and joined Roodlane in April 2000. Ken is a consultant in occupational and aviation medicine practice with Roodlane Medical in the City and at Gatwick Airport with Airport Medical Services. Whilst Ken has particular expertise in aviation medicine, he has been in charge of the Occupational Health of 7000 employees and as such is well placed to advise on OH issues.
Ken is a Fellow of the Aerospace Medical Association, an Academician of the International Academy of Aviation and Space Medicine, a Liveryman of and Medical Adviser to the Guild of Air Pilots and Air Navigators, Civilian Consultant in Aviation Medicine to the Royal Navy and previously to the Army, Adviser to the International Federation of Airline Pilots Associations and belongs to several medical societies.
He has a current private pilot's licence for helicopters and aeroplanes and his interests include sailing and squash.
Peter graduated from Cambridge and completed his post-graduate training in general practice in South London before moving to the City in 1987. He was a founder partner of the Practice in 1991, since developing a particular interest in the epidemiology of cardiac disease and the role of lipids and other metabolic abnormalities in cardiac risk assessment as part of our screening programmes. He also has special interests in dermatology, trauma and orthopaedics and aviation medicine.
Peter is an approved examiner for the MCA under the Merchant Shipping Regulations for the UK and Sweden; an approved examiner for Norwegian and Oil & Gas UK offshore workers and also appointed by the Health & Safety Executive to perform statutory medical examinations under the Ionising Radiations Regulations (1999). He is a member of the Society of Occupational Medicine and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Medicine.
Karen qualified at the Middlesex Hospital in 1987 and spent the next 5 years working at a variety of London Hospitals including Guys, St. Thomas', the Middlesex and University College Hospital whilst achieving her Membership of the Royal College of Physicians.
She moved to Bournemouth and into General Practice in 1992. Karen settled quickly into family life, bringing up four children and becoming Chairman of Governors of a small independent school, but also finding time to broaden her post-graduate education and train in acupuncture (1997). Karen offers this as a treatment alternative for a wide range of musculoskeletal and other conditions such as PMT, migraine and chronic headaches.
Whilst in practice on the South Coast, Karen also set up and ran a private Stress Management Clinic and became a partner in Prime Medical, a medical screening company. She has a Certificate in Stress Management and is an active member of the International Stress Management Association (MISMA).
Karen's background of general practice, stress management and health screening make her a perfect and welcome addition to the team of doctors at Roodlane. She returned to live in London and joined Roodlane in September 2004.
Specialist interests include Stress Management, Occupational Health, Family Planning and Acupuncture.
Gill graduated at Bristol University and trained in hospital medicine and oncology in London until 1986, attaining membership of the Royal College of Physicians. She subsequently completed post-graduate training in general practice in north London. She spent 2 years in Africa working in primary care and infectious diseases before returning to the UK and joining the practice in 1991.
Gill developed her interest in occupational health, particularly in the context of the City environment and in the specialised field of psychosocial medicine and it's contribution to health problems in this environment. She has also devoted time to expanding her knowledge and expertise in medico legal issues.
She is a highly experienced lecturer and trainer with a strong interest in health education and health promotion within the working population.
She maintains an interest in women's health and complimentary medicine and acupuncture. She is a member of the Society of Occupational Medicine and has post-graduate qualifications in Occupational Health.
Sheena joined Roodlane in the summer of 2000. She has an excellent pedigree in City medicine having previously spent six years looking after a broad range of both private patients and corporate clients within the City. She became a partner in 2003 and has brought considerable breadth to the practice spanning many fields.
Sheena trained at the Royal London and St. Mary's hospitals, where she gained a first class honours degree in Physiology. In addition she has further qualifications in family planning, aviation medicine and, of course, occupational health. Her experience covers interests including Accident & Emergency, paediatrics, obstetrics & gynaecology and orthopaedics.
Sheena is a keen outdoor sportswoman and, when not looking after patients, will be happy to take up a challenge in anything from clay pigeon shooting and skiing to sailing!
Harry graduated with distinction from the University of Cape Town, South Africa in 1989. He spent 18 months in postgraduate training posts at Grooteschuur hospital, following which he spent a fascinating year in Canada working with the rural flying doctor service; a perfect training ground to hone the skills of any doctor in dealing with the unexpected.
In 1992 he came to London where he worked in a variety of specialities in teaching hospitals before going on to complete specialist training in general practice and obtain his MRCGP. Harry joined Roodlane in July 2001 and became a partner in 2004.
Harry's background means that he has a wide range of medical interests including sports and exercise medicine, nutrition, sexual health and psychosexual medicine and is an approved examiner for Oil & Gas UK offshore workers.
Gavin graduated from Cambridge and joined the original Lloyds practice in 1979 before becoming a founder partner of the present practice in 1991. He is involved in all aspects of City medicine with long-standing interests in stress related disorders and psychological medicine. He has particular expertise in the field of life and health insurance, specialising in disability assessment and high risk life underwriting. He is a Fellow of the Assurance Medical Society and chief medical officer to Scottish Re Insurance.
Gavin is also a specialist in gynaecology working from the practice at Roodlane Medical and London Bridge hospital. He is an approved examiner for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency under the Merchant Shipping Regulations for the UK and an approved examiner for Norwegian and Oil & Gas UK offshore workers.
Peter trained at Guy's hospital in London and graduated in 1980. He then gained experience in a wide variety of hospital jobs including dermatology, respiratory medicine and gastroenterology before completing his general practice training in 1987.
Peter joined a practice in Maida Vale, West London where he cared for a wide variety of patients from a spectrum of different cultural and ethnic backgrounds, ultimately becoming senior partner there in 1995. During this time he was a GP trainer and Director of the Central London Out-of-Hours service.
He has worked on a part-time basis in the City since 1987 and with Roodlane since 1991. After several years of working in both the public and private sectors Peter decided that his future lay in the City and became a full-time partner in 1998. He has a wide range of medical interests particularly in dermatology, nutrition, psychological medicine and addictions.
